4.5 bln yuan to subsidize rural teachers

According to the Ministry of Education, in 2012, 4.5 billion yuan (715.5 million U.S. dollars) has been paid to subsidize rural teachers who have been working for the schools of compulsory education. Teachers who serve in poverty-stricken areas in western and central regions of China will receive 27,000 yuan and 24,000 yuan respectively in subsidies.

From 2006, China has launched projects to recruit teachers from college graduates to serve in poverty-stricken areas. During the 7 years, the central government has provided 15.3 billion yuan of financial support, benefiting some 523,000 people.
