Chinese New Year celebrated in London

The celebration of Chinese New Year was held in London on Sunday with thousands of people participating. The year 2012 is the tenth year that the festivities were held in the English capital. Now, let’s hear from some people who were at the celebration.

With firecrackers lighted, Chinatown in London is celebrating the Year of the Dragon in historic Trafalgar Square.

London’s Mayor Boris Johnson takes part in the Dotting of the Eye ceremony, which signifies bringing the dragons and lions to life. He welcomes the crowds to the largest Chinese New Year celebration outside of Asia.

Boris Johnson, mayor of London, said, "The incredible crowds here I think are a testimony of the immense contribution of the Chinese community to London."

The crowds are treated to 100 world renowned performers, which makes the event a multi-cultural festival.

Lucy Mitchell, spokeswoman of Chinese New Year Celebrations, said, "I used to sit up and watch the lion dancing come down the street and it really was about the
Chinese community then, all the local shops and just bringing good luck for the coming year, but if you look around you today, 300,000 people are expected. It is truly multi-cultural now-a-days, not just Chinese but people from all different cultures."

A London citizen said, "It’s marvellous, beautiful, fantastic, very well organized."

A London citizen said, "We come specially to see Chinese New Year, the dragon, because I collect dragons."

2012 is not only a year of celebrations for London being the year of the Olympic Games, but also the year that Britain celebrates 40 years of full diplomatic relations with China.
