In celebration of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Georgia, a Chinese Culture Week was launched on Monday in the Georgian capital Tbilisi. The week drew open its curtains with a Chinese dance performance, putting the best of the Silk Road on the theatre stage.

Dancers from Gansu Song and Dance Theatre presented one of their longest running performance, "The Charm of Dunhuang", for audiences at Griboyedov Theatre on Monday night. The curious locals even sneaked into the theatre during final rehearsals to get a peek of Chinese dance.

Audience member said, "That's my son. I brought him to see how we see Chinese culture. Because we really like Chinese culture, I think it's very interesting, because Chinese people have very interesting history and culture."

As a troupe that wows on regular international tours every year, the dancers naturally brought their A-game - The famous "Thousand-hand Goddess of Mercy". Even renowned Georgian ballerina Nina Ananiashvili was there to see this exotic dance.

Nina Ananiashvili, director of State Ballet of Georgia, said, "We see big quality who comes here and. This is traditional Chinese dance I really like watching them because it's different, but this is beautiful moment, everybody's understood."

Ever since the first Confucius Institute in Georgia was opened in 2010, Chinese culture has become a hot topic of conversation among Georgians. Aside from stage performances, the Culture Week also includes events such as exhibitions of photography, Chinese calligraphy and water-and-ink paintings.
