Stanford Univ. displays Chinese inkwash

At Stanford University in California, the Cantor Art Center is holding an exhibition of classic inkwash paintings from the 20th century. The one-hundred-and-ten pieces include works of both paintings and calligraphy.

All of them were created with the simple brush, a writing implement used by Chinese for thousands of years. The portraits and landscapes were selected from the masterpieces of the four most distinguished inkwash artists of 20th-Century China.

Produced in the modern period, many of the paintings show signs of technical approaches from Western fine arts.
